Intimacy Coordinator: Elle McAlpine

The space between: An intimacy coordinator reshapes Cyprus theatre

Our Elle McAlpine found herself in Cyprus in October working for the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC) production of Marius von Mayenburg’s “Nachtland” directed by Athena Xenidou.

“We looked at intimacy through the lens of proximity of bodies in space,” McAlpine explains, describing her work with the Nachtland cast. “How two bodies, two actors, two characters relate to each other through how close they are or how far away, and what shapes they intuitively made with each other.”

In Cyprus, McAlpine’s work with THOC represents more than just a single production; it’s a potential catalyst for change. She advocates for training local intimacy coordinators, arguing that Cyprus needs its own professionals who understand both the technical aspects of the work and the cultural context in which it takes place.
